Ministerial posse hands out the Celery

WITH THE BEGINNING of the new school year the Portuguese PM, José Socrates, and a posse of ministers-in-waiting handed out 3,000 new Classmate PCs to eagerly waiting kiddies. This is the first batch of the 500,000 machines expected to be delivered over a three-year period. Delivering on a promise made just a couple of months ago, first- through fourth-graders throughout Portugal received yesterday the new lappies for next to nothing (€50) or for free in the case of low-income families. The Magalhães is a second generation Classmate PC, based on the Celeron 900 unit, rather than the recently launched Atom-based Classmate PC….

Fashionably late

THE GREAT CHAEBOL of computing, Samsung Electronics, announced this mornin’ its hip new porta-laptop, the NC10. You’ve probably guessed by now that it sports the same hardware you’ll find in most other netbooks on the market: the Atom CPU, a 10-inch 1024×600 LED screen, 80GB or 160GB HDD (we’re presuming, Samsung being what it is, SSDs are on the horizon), BT 2.0+EDR, 1.3mp webcam and 3-in-1 card reader. The NC10 does have some slight differences from the majority of netbooks. Take for example the GMA950 graphics (not as bad as the 945). Shiny and tiny What Samsung is touting, however, is the netbook’s ingenious design (although ‘Going out in style’ hardly means what they think it means)….
