Only a quid on Ebay

PRIVATE COUNCIL information is cheaper than you might think - in fact you can pick some up for under £1. Security firm Random Storm’s Andrew Mason logged onto Ebay this August and bought some network hardware for just 99p – what followed was the unexpected. When plugged in the device automatically connected to the VPN of Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire. This is most surprising as Mr Mason didn’t do anything but plug the device in, it just connected without warning showing that the seller hadn’t bothered to protect the VPN from being accessed. Kirklees Council is lucky that this didn’t fall into the hands of someone more criminally minded as all sorts of vulnerabilities could have been exploited….

Apply to be a spy

SPYING FOR MI6 requires a First degree at Oxbridge and having contacts in all the right places, right? Apparently not… all you need to do is sign on to your Facebook account. That’s right, in an attempt to recruit the next generation of spies, MI6 is dropping the old school tie selection methods in favour of looking for Joe average spies from a variety of backgrounds. MI6 says it wants its officers to “reflect the society” it serves. Two years ago you would only have been invited to join the spy community if you were nose deep in an astrophysics book at Oxford University, now in amongst all the pokes and pictures you could be asked to join a spying organisation….

As it has trouble answering the phone

KIDS IN DANGER at home will soon be able to access the NSPCC services via text messaging or online. The child protection society hopes to reach out to more children in trouble by making use of the technology they are comfortable with. Up until now the NSPCC has been unable to answer all calls to its 0800 1111 ChildLine number – it is currently recruiting more counselors to help with this problem. At present only 67 per cent of calls get answered while a mere 40 perc ent of children get the counselling they need. Dame Mary Marsh, director and chief executive of the NSPCC says, “At the moment, we’ve got a real problem about not being able to reach every child who wants help.” Dame Marsh continued to say that the plan is to try and put together more channels of access to help those who would be ordinarily left ringing….

Is that a phone in your pocket?

SPERM HAS YET another enemy – this time it’s none other than your trusty device, the mobile phone. That’s right, the Cleveland Clinic is now saying that keeping your mobile phone in talk-mode and in your pocket can decrease sperm quality – if you’re a man of course. Ashok Agarwal, the Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine says that, “We believe that these devices are used because we consider them very safe, but it could cause harmful effects due to the proximity of the phones and the exposure that they are causing to the gonads.” Agarwal’s team took semen samples from 32 men and brought them to the lab - we’re hoping this was willingly….
